History of the Deluxe Outrage board game

The Outrage board game was inspired by a Seventeenth Century plot to steal the crown jewels of England from the Tower of London. In May 1671, the adventurer Colonel Blood was in charge of a heist to steal the crown jewels and he nearly made away with the loot. The theft was only discovered as Blood and his accomplices exited the Tower and the gang was caught red handed.

The Deluxe Outrage is a board game (most expensive in the world) was made in the early Nineteen Ninties. The game was designed under the direct supervision from the Tower of London so that it ensures authenticity. The first boxed editions where available from 1992 and the game has now sold over 60,000 copies. The game used to only be available at Harrods, Hamleys and the Tower of London store UK, but now the game also vailable to purchase direct online from some retailers.

How the Deluxe Outrage Board Game is made

The laminated board game is set into a solid mahogany cabinet. Craftsman built the Deluxe Outrage Board Game to the highest possible standard, and the French polished cabinet has a drawer with hand cut dovetail joints in which the playing pieces are kept.

The Deluxe Outrage Board Game also has two packs of cards edged with gold leaf. The Yeoman Warders & White Tower playing pieces are hallmarked sterling silver. Each of the playing pieces are coloured in enamel, and the Elizabethan Crown coins are also hallmarked solid silver.

The best thing about the Outrage Deluxe Board Game are the replicas of the Crown Jewels. They are fashioned in 18ct solid gold and are studded with real rubies, sapphires, diamonds and emeralds. Each Delux Outrage Board Game is individually numbered on a brass plaque to ensure exclusivity, and this plaque can be personalised if desired.

How to Play the Deluxe Outrage Board Game

The Deluxe Outrage Board Game allows you to make history repeat itself or for the more cunning player to successfully escape with the loot that Colonel Blood failed to secure.

The game board is an exact accurate miniature of the Tower of London, featuring all the rooms, passageways, and hidden passageways of the Tower. Players move from location to location and ever deeper into the stronghold to reach the jewels and make a quick exit.

All the mini replica jewels are charming and prestigious. There are five pieces, each gold-plated and less than two inches long which are described below:-

  • St Edward’s Crown used during the coronation
  • Prince of Wales Crown used during the investiture of the Prince of Wales
  • Orb representing the world
  • Sword representing royal power
  • Sceptre representing the church

The objective of the Delux Outrage Board Game is to gather sufficient tools and important knowledge to steal the most precious treasure and make a clean getaway ahead of the other players. The winner is the player holding the most jewels by the end of the game.

The game plays very similar to the world famous Monopoly game, with the shake of a dice, and the use of cards to tell you good or bad news.

Rules of the Deluxe Outrage Board Game

The rules of play are really pretty simple, but at first may appear complex. Players must learn how to collect a flag to gain entry to centre of the board, a coin to pay the ferryman, equipment to breach security and sufficient weaponry to with stand a challenge of combat from another player or players.

Equipment is provided by the use of the Tower Cards, which are given out at the start of the game and can be collected throughout the game.

Raven Cards are gathered by moving around the board and their instructions must be followed. These type of deadly cards can change a player’s luck for better or worse in the blink of an eye.

The game begins as a Monopoly type board, which must be travelled once anti-clockwise before a player may enter the centre of the board. Players must navigate the board, avoiding the Yeoman Warders & other obstacles, to reach the White Tower where the jewels are held.

When a jewel is successfully removed from its spot, the next move is to run for river because an item is only secured on the other side of the water. Until that point all the other players can attack and steal the stolen goods.

A roll of two dice dictates a player’s movement around the board. A great touch is the ‘Splitting the Seven’ rule. It allows a player to split the seven spaces gained from the roll between their own counter and another player’s piece. Imagine a fellow player is about to escape and a split seven enables them to be thrown back into the conflict.
